Alliance Research: PRIP 2025
2025 PRIP Research Highlights New Concerns About Retirement Today
2025 Protected Retirement Income and Planning (PRIP) study
America is in the middle a historic demographic shift, which we call Peak 65, with more than 4.1 million Americans turning 65 each year through 2027. What used to be 10,000 over the past decade is now over 11,200 every day, and 2025 is the peak of Peak 65. A concerning trend is emerging as a significant portion of the Peak 65 generation lacks sufficient protected income, putting them at risk of outliving their savings.
The 2025 Protected Retirement Income and Planning (PRIP) study, is the Alliance’s landmark annual study that exams the rapidly changing retirement planning landscape, behavioral shifts and attitudes towards retirement income and planning strategies, and the emerging role of annuities to protect retirement portfolios. In its seventh year, PRIP is the only research of its kind that surveys both consumers and financial professionals simultaneously.
Ch 2: Sacrificing Retirement Savings for Family
Americans are putting their retirement security — and even their health — at risk to support loved ones. More than half of those helping adult children, parents, or relatives say it cuts into their savings. Few are willing to reduce support, even if it means skipping medical care or lowering their standard of living. Concerns about healthcare costs and Gen-X retirement readiness are rising. This year’s survey also reveals growing doubts about Social Security and the increasing importance of protected income solutions like annuities. Ch 1: Stunning findings about Peak 65
Facing persistent inflation, market volatility, and growing fears about the future of Social Security, one-third of Americans approaching retirement say they’re considering delaying it altogether. Nearly half of retirees report anxiety about spending money in retirement, and 54% of pre-retirees worry about outliving their savings. The study also reveals a growing shift in financial advice, with annuities emerging as the most recommended investment for retirement security. ABOUT THE SURVEY
The Alliance’s 2025 PRIP research, which was conducted by IPSOS, is the only study of its kind that surveys consumers and financial professionals with similar questions simultaneously. The study surveyed 3,502 consumers aged 45-75, weighted by age, gender, and region to be representative of the national census demographics, with a corollary study of 500 financial professionals.
